Messenger Group Chat (beta)

Posted on April 28, 2008, 03:54:00 PM by

Messenger Group is a service which allows a group of Messenger users to chat together in real time. Unlike Windows Live Messenger multi person conversations, this group chat will not be dismissed when the conversation is finished (closed).

You can create a group for a team, a department or a company and chat online together. No need to be on eachothers contact list and your Live ID will not be exposed to the group either.

Messenger Group is developed and released by Incesoft, a global partner of Microsoft. Started in Asia several years ago, Messenger Group already has many users and lots of Messenger groups have been created. Today is the release of the English version.

If you have a Windows Live ID, you can create your own group for free* at http://www.messengergroupchat.com

*A Messenger account can create three groups, each group has 10 members. If you want your group have more members, you need to pay money to upgrade the group.

User experience
Ok, I tried this as a member, not an owner of a group and would like to share this with you all:
- It works by adding a bot to your contact list, after adding the bot will initiate a conversation and invite you to start the app (activity).
- If you close the conversation it will pop up again if a member of the group sends a message, to prevent this you have to set Messages in the activity pane to "block all mesages from this group" (if you forgot you can also temporarily block the bot of course)
- The app will not show up automaticly when the conversation opens again, to get it back send a nudge (none of the members will be nudged, just the bot) and along with sending you some stats it will invite you to start the app again. Thanks to mynetx for telling me how to do this, it's rather freaky being in a chat and not know who else is there.
- To leave the group entirely, delete the bot from your contact list.
